Fragrance house
The Baron
The Baron is a men’s fragrance associated first with Evyan Perfumes and later with LTL Fragrances, rather than a separately documented fragrance house. Its documented lineage runs through Hartnell Perfumes, founded in New York in 1943 by Dr. Baron Walter Langer von Langendorff, Evelyn Diane Westall, and partners, and through Evyan, recorded as established by Westall in New York in 1945. After the other Hartnell partners departed, von Langendorff and Westall continued the business, with his chemistry background informing its perfume-making work. Evyan launched The Baron in 1961 as a classical aromatic fougère for men, developed by von Langendorff. After the original Evyan production was discontinued, LTL acquired rights in 1995 and relaunched the fragrance in association with LTL, with a re-orchestration using modern ingredients; contemporary coverage places the U.S. relaunch in late 1997. The relaunch material identifies The Baron with the classical aromatic fougère family, built around basil, lavender, and sage alongside Egyptian jasmine, carnation, sandalwood, and vetiver, and associates the cologne with the 1960s and 1970s.
