The Body Shop
The Body Shop was founded in Brighton, England, in 1976 by Dame Anita Roddick. From the outset, it built its identity around naturally based or naturally inspired beauty products, refillable packaging, ethical sourcing, and the belief that business could be a force for good. Roddick’s activism became part of the brand’s public identity through campaigns on animal rights, human rights, environmental issues, and the empowerment of women and girls. Its Community Fair Trade programme, operating since 1987, remains part of its sourcing and community model. The Body Shop was publicly listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1984, and an investor consortium led by Auréa Group completed its acquisition of the business on September 7, 2024. In fragrance, White Musk, launched in 1981, became a signature scent of a generation and is described as one of the brand’s iconic fragrances; its musk is synthetic and cruelty-free.
