The People Of The Labyrinths
The People of the Labyrinths was started in Arnhem in 1984 by Hans Demoed and Geert de Rooij as a Dutch fashion house built around handmade, hand-printed and hand-dyed garments. Its visual language joined vivid colour, rich decoration, sharp graphics and silk-screen prints drawn from heraldry, visual art, history, anthropology, photography, nature and science, with the labyrinth as a recurring motif. The founders extended the label into interior design, art design, cosmetics and perfume, developing a connected lifestyle concept; its documented exhibition history includes presentations in Paris and New York in 1984, museum-related projects in Amsterdam and Utrecht in 2005, and co-curation of MAKE BELIEVE at the Arnhem Fashion Biennale in 2013. In April 2014, after three decades, they ended the regular twice-yearly fashion collections to devote more time to art, interiors and photography, while the house’s current presentation brings together fashion, interiors, perfume and collection books through hand-dyeing, hand-printing, colour and labyrinthine imagery. In fragrance, Luctor et Emergo was the first scent and has been described as a cult classic; A.MAZE followed in 2007 as a rose-focused composition with henna, saffron and woods.
