The Perfumist (US)
The Perfumist traces its origins to a perfume house established in Istanbul, Turkey, in the 1700s by Sayed Mohammed al-Attar. Across generations, the family tradition carried forward traditional attar-making and distillation methods before the business moved to the United States; the house is now based in Houston, Texas. Ali Attar is the sixth-generation master perfumist and owner, and makes the majority of the house’s work. The Perfumist presents its identity through an older form of perfumery in which art, science, and alchemy meet, alongside its family heritage and traditional approach. Its 2018 logo brings together a whirling dervish, a rose, and Arabic calligraphy, linking the house’s visual language to its family history, perfumery, and East-West creative identity. Rose has a particular place in the house’s story: it is Ali Attar’s preferred material, connected to the family’s history of rose distillation and echoed in the logo.
