The Smurfs
The Smurfs were created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known as Peyo, and first appeared in 1958 in the Johan and Peewit story The Smurfs and the Magic Flute. Initially supporting characters, they were developed into a dedicated comic-book series after readers responded strongly to their appearance. Their screen history includes Belvision’s first feature-length film in 1975 and Hanna-Barbera’s television adaptation, which premiered on NBC in 1981; Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation later produced 3D films in 2011 and 2013, followed by the fully animated Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017. Peyo remained devoted to their creative development until his death in 1992, after which his family and staff continued the work. Under the rights structure, Studio Peyo SA owns the intellectual rights relating to Peyo’s work, while IMPS exclusively owns the rights to exploit the Smurfs characters and universe. In June 2024, IMPS, LAFIG Belgium, and Peyo Productions were rebranded under the single Peyo Company identity. The Smurfs have also appeared in child-oriented, character-based fragrances, including Smurfette in the Signature Collection and a 2013 Blue Style 3-D Collection.
