Théophile Berthon
Théophile Berthon traces its claimed roots to an oil mill and soap works established in the late nineteenth century in Salon-de-Provence. The soap works received gold medals at the Paris Universal Expositions of 1878 and 1889 and the Grand Prix of Hanoi in 1903, but the original business declined after the First World War, the 1929 crisis, the spread of powdered detergents, and the postwar rise of synthetic shower gels. In 2009, Pauline Lachal and Jean-Pierre Chambon became interested in natural soaps and cosmetics after their child’s sensitive skin led them to seek more suitable products. They relaunched Berthon know-how in 2012 by adapting traditional soap-making and saponification methods to concentrated liquid soaps; the current legal company was created on 28 November that year. From 2014, Théophile Berthon extended its heritage into technical face and body cosmetics, emphasizing vegetable oils, texture, fragrance, formulation quality, and safety. A 2015 Slow Cosmétique special mention and a Cosmoprof Hong Kong award for its face serum preceded a 2016 collaboration with Alexander Wang. Its public identity combines Provençal soap heritage with natural cosmetics and fragrance-led body care.
