Fragrance house
This Works
This Works was launched in 2003 by Kathy Phillips, who had worked as a Vogue beauty editor. Phillips shaped the brand around effective, targeted products rather than complicated naming or image-led claims; its name came from the team’s conclusion that the products worked. The brand evolved from aromatherapy-led bath, body and skincare into a science-led skincare and wellness business organized around the body clock, natural actives, botanical oils, clinical testing, user panels and functional fragrance. Its original pillow spray was bottled for Crowne Plaza Hotels as a turndown gift in 2007, before positive feedback led to the launch of Deep Sleep pillow spray in 2011. Deep Sleep is This Works’ defining fragrance-led product, with more than 9 million units sold worldwide. This Works supported an independent fMRI study led by Professor Gaby Badre that associated the fragrance with brain activity linked to pleasure and calmness. Today, Inspirit Capital owns the brand after acquiring it from Canopy Growth through a corporate carve-out on 18 December 2023. This Works is also expanding into nervous-system care, mood, stress management and personal functional fragrance, including Own Time.
