Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger launched its namesake brand in New York City in 1985. Its identity draws on Americana, classic American style, and red, white, and blue visual elements, often described as “classic American cool.” Early menswear developed into a broader lifestyle brand, while Tommy Hilfiger’s work in the 1990s helped connect fashion with music, celebrity, and pop-culture campaigns. Phillips-Van Heusen acquired Tommy Hilfiger B.V. and its subsidiaries in 2010, and Tommy Hilfiger continued as Principal Designer, providing direction for the global design process. The brand’s fragrance line launched in 1995 with the men’s scent tommy, followed by Tommy Girl in 1996. A 1996 report described tommy as the No. 1-selling men’s fragrance in the United States the previous year and noted five FiFi awards; British Vogue reported in 2002 that Tommy Girl was the fragrance most teenage girls in its cited survey were taking home.
