Trojan

Trojan began in 1916, when Merle Young founded Young’s Rubber Company and created the Trojan condom brand. Its early identity used the helmet of a Trojan warrior, an image intended to convey strength and virility to its predominantly male consumer base. A 1930 federal appeals-court trademark case established legal protection for the Trojan brand amid broader restrictions on condom advertising and sales. Carter-Wallace purchased Youngs Rubber Company in 1985, and on September 28, 2001, Church & Dwight and Kelso & Company’s Armkel joint venture acquired Carter-Wallace’s consumer-products business, including Trojan. During the 1980s, Trojan’s public communications broadened from pregnancy prevention to disease prevention, including HIV/AIDS-era messaging; its first national television advertisement aired in 1991. The brand entered fine fragrance through a licensing partnership between Church & Dwight and Victory International, launching three scents in February 2022. The fragrance collection is currently presented in Men, Women, and For All formats, with a launch identity focused on confidence, sexual self-expression, and freedom from constraints.
