Truefitt & Hill

Truefitt & Hill traces its origin to 1805, when its first shop opened at 2 Cross-Lane, Long Acre, in London. Founded by William Francis Truefitt, who styled himself hairdresser to the British Royal Court, the business received its first Royal Warrant from King George III. In 1935, Truefitt acquired Edwin S. Hill & Co.; the combination is presented as the beginning of the modern Truefitt & Hill era. H.P. Truefitt moved the business to Old Bond Street that year, and the present location at 71 St James’s Street dates from 1994. Guinness World Records identifies Truefitt & Hill as the oldest barber-shop business, with the present establishment in St James’s. Its public identity brings together traditional gentlemen’s barbering, perfumery, grooming products, English fragrances and shaving requisites. The 1805 cologne, launched in 1999 and based on the 1850s Palmerston Bouquet, commemorates the year the business began.
