Tumi
Tumi was founded in 1975 by Charlie Clifford after his Peace Corps experience in Peru inspired an appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship. The brand began as a leather-goods business importing bags from South America before shifting in the early 1980s toward luggage made from ballistic nylon. Its 1983 black ballistic travel bags and business cases remain part of Tumi’s defining heritage. The brand’s identity is built around design excellence, functional performance, technical innovation, quality, customer service, and improving life on the move. Its creative direction later broadened its focus from an all-black, function-first business-traveler profile toward a lifestyle identity engaging creatives, athletes, chefs, and musicians. Tumi became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in 2012. In 2016, Samsonite completed its acquisition of Tumi Holdings, making Tumi an indirect wholly owned subsidiary and its current corporate owner.
