Umbro

Umbro began in 1924, when Harold Humphreys invited his brother Wallace to start a company after trading from a pub back room in Mobberley; its name combines the family name and “brothers.” The brand expanded beyond football into rugby in 1933, and in 1955 its Sportswear X-Mas Pack, later known as the Umbroset, marked a move toward selling club replica kits to football fans. At the 1966 World Cup, England won wearing Umbro, while 15 of the 16 participating teams were equipped by the brand. Umbro’s creative identity is closely tied to football design, tailoring, and its double-diamond mark: the 2009 England shirt drew directly on its tailoring heritage, and independent design coverage describes the brand as influential in football-shirt design. In 2021, Iconix Brand Group, whose portfolio included Umbro, was acquired by an affiliate of Lancer Capital. A 2024 UK Supreme Court judgment identified Iconix Luxembourg Holdings SARL as the owner and registered proprietor of the UMBRO trademarks at issue.
