Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters’ story began in 1970, when Richard “Dick” Hayne, Scott Belair, and Judy Wicks opened a small store called Free People across from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Serving college-aged customers with second-hand clothing, furniture, jewelry, and home décor, the store developed a retail approach built around distinctive merchandise and settings that adapted existing buildings while preserving original architectural features. The Free People name changed to Urban Outfitters during the brand’s early development, and the company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1976. The company broadened beyond the Urban Outfitters retail concept by establishing the Free People wholesale division in 1984 and opening the first Anthropologie store in 1992. Its 1993 initial public offering marked the transition to public ownership, and Urban Outfitters remains part of URBN. The brand is founded on self-expression, connection, and creativity, with a focus on cultivating community and providing a platform for individual expression.
