Tru Fragrance began in 1969 as Romane Fragrances, founded by Bernie Dworin to sell perfumes to independent clothing retailers. The company changed its name to Tru Fragrance in 2011, then broadened beyond fragrance into beauty and adopted Tru Fragrance + Beauty to reflect its wider portfolio of owned, licensed, and exclusive brands. Its fragrance identity is expressed through Tru Western, a signature collection of colognes and perfumes with an American Western identity. In late 2014, Tru secured an exclusive fragrance placement for Le Monde Gourmand with Urban Outfitters, a retail partnership rather than a change in ownership. The company was acquired by its current executives in 2004; on April 2, 2024, Monogram Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Tru Fragrance & Beauty. On January 8, 2025, Tru Fragrance acquired Lake & Skye outright, following a minority investment in the brand in 2018.
