Vespa

Vespa originated in 1946 in Pontedera, Italy, as Piaggio’s postwar project for an accessible, simple two-wheeled vehicle. Enrico Piaggio commissioned aeronautical designer Corradino d’Ascanio, whose engineering and design work produced its distinctive load-bearing body and practical step-through form. The Vespa 98 launched that year, and production reached one million units within a decade as the marque expanded internationally. Over time, Vespa evolved from practical postwar mobility into a design- and culture-oriented symbol associated with Italian style, youth culture, cinema, music, art, photography, and fashion. Production reached ten million units in 1988. Management control of Piaggio’s Italian and international operations passed to Immsi in 2003. In 2018, Piaggio launched the Vespa Elettrica, extending the identity into electric mobility while retaining its established design language. Vespa also entered fragrance through a 2014 partnership with Coty; the line expanded in 2015 with Vespa Sensazione, while Vespa for Her received Spain’s 2015 Perfume Academy Award for Best Feminine Fragrance. In 2026, Vespa’s essential lines, surface purity, and balance between function and aesthetics remained part of its stated identity.
