Yohji Yamamoto
Y’s, Yohji Yamamoto’s first brand, was established in 1972. Yamamoto presented his first Tokyo collection in 1977 and his first Paris collection in 1981; the Yohji Yamamoto company was established in 1984, the same year he presented his first Paris menswear collection. His design identity is associated with oversized and unfinished-looking garments, unconventional fabrics, challenges to conventional gender boundaries, and distinctive approaches to pattern-making, cutting, silhouette, and the space between body and garment. His creative work has also extended into costume design for film, opera, and theatre, including projects associated with Wim Wenders, Takeshi Kitano, Wagner, and Pina Bausch. In 2002, he became creative director of Y-3, his collaboration with adidas. After Yohji Yamamoto Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in October 2009, Integral’s special-purpose company acquired the former business’s assets and related operations in December of that year, subsequently taking the Yohji Yamamoto Inc. name. The house now encompasses Yohji Yamamoto, Y’s, Y-3, Limi feu, Ground Y, S’YTE, WILDSIDE, and related labels. Its fragrance history began with Yohji, introduced in 1996 as Yamamoto’s first perfume, followed by Yohji Essential in 1998.
